Eclipse Educator Webinar Series

Save the Date:  Eclipse Educator Webinar Series – Wednesday, April 19, from 4 to 5 p.m.

Educators in Southern Illinois are invited to join NASA Education for a virtual educator professional development webinar series on the upcoming August 21, 2017, total solar eclipse!

​While participants will be able to log in as individuals, we are encouraging groups such as schools, museums, libraries, amateur astronomers, science centers, and others to organize “viewing groups”.   Please use the contact information below to request to setup a viewing group at your location.

Description of NASA Professional Development Webinar Series

On Wednesday, April 19, from 4 to 5 p.m. Central, the series will kick off with an hour-long live interactive program.  NASA scientists and specialists from NASA Goddard Space Flight Center will share with you the who/what/where/how about the August 21st total solar eclipse event.  In addition, participants will receive a preview of the educational activities that will be shared during the grade level programs occurring the following week.

The following week will host online events targeted for specific grade levels, K-6 and 7-12.

Tuesday, April 25, from 4 to 5 p.m. Central – Educators for grades K-6 will be able to join colleagues for an Education Demonstration event on eclipse related topics.  NASA education specialists from NASA Goddard Space Flight Center will share developmentally appropriate hands-on activities with participants during an hour-long live interactive program.  Activities will include: The Eclipse Cereal Box Viewer is designed to use a KWL worksheet as a guided student activity to develop interest, curiosity, pose questions and gain knowledge about a solar eclipse.  They will then create their own indirect eclipse viewer for use during the partial phases of a solar eclipse for safe viewing. An additional activity will demonstrate the use of solar viewing glasses.

Thursday, April 27, from 4 to 5 p.m. Central – Educators for grades 7-12 will be able to join colleagues for an Education Demonstration event on eclipse related topics.  NASA education specialists from NASA Goddard Space Flight Center will share developmentally appropriate hands-on activities with participants during an hour-long live interactive program.  Activities will include: Modeling Meaningful Eclipses is designed to use simple materials to create 3D models of Earth, Moon and Sun to demonstrate a solar eclipse. An additional activity will demonstrate the use of solar viewing glasses.
