On October 14, an annular solar eclipse will be visible along a path from Oregon to Texas. In Southern Illinois, we will have the opportunity to view a partial solar eclipse that day. Join us at SIU Carbondale to experience the partial solar eclipse with a Saluki Football game watch party directly following. Enjoy a day of solar telescopes, family-friendly hands-on astronomy and science activities, as well as informational tabling. Live feeds of the Annular Eclipse from across the country will be displayed on the big screen in the stadium, and NASA EDGE will be filming inside Saluki Stadium. Visitors are welcome to bring their own lawn chairs and blankets as well as photography or telescope equipment or watch from the Saluki Stadum bleachers or chairs. Solar scopes will also be available for public viewing. The Annular Eclipse will start at 10:33am and ends at 1:30pm with maximum eclipse at 11:59am.

Free eclipse viewing glasses will be available. No registration or tickets required attend this event. Limited concessions for purchase will be available on site.

What is an annular eclipse?

An annular solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, but when it is at or near its farthest point from Earth. For more information about types of eclipse, visit NASA’s website by clicking the button below.
