There is a very large amount of camping available in the area within the hundreds of thousands of acres that make up the Shawnee National Forest and surrounding public grounds. Southern Illinois is also home to many cabins, bed and breakfasts, and other vacation rentals.
Summer is a perfect time to enjoy the wonders of Southernmost Illinois. Visit Southern Illinois’ many historic sites, state and national parks, or the wine trail.
Carbondale, Ill. Is the “Solar Eclipse Crossroads”. It was the closest city to the point of greatest duration for the 2017 total solar eclipse, and the only place where you could see the 2017 eclipse and catch the 2024 eclipse from the same location.
