Campus Involvement
A total solar eclipse is a rare and special event, and we want to make sure that everyone has the opportunity to experience and enjoy it. Faculty, staff, and students have many ways to participate, so find something that interests you to get involved and engage with the Carbondale and campus community!
Classes on Eclipse Day (Monday, April 8) will be canceled, but the university will be open. Students will not be in class that day and are encouraged to participate in the exciting events and activities on campus. All offices will be open throughout the day but may close for a period during the afternoon so everyone can experience totality. It is up to the supervisor of an office as to how office hours are handled on Monday, April 8. The university encourages all employees and students to get out, volunteer and experience the eclipse on campus that day.
Share an Activity or Demonstration…
During the Crossroads Astronomy, Science, and Technology Expo (CASTE).
Promote your organization. Share knowledge. Demonstrate your special talents. Raise awareness about an issue.
Vendor fees waived for RSOs and departments. Fill out our Campus Involvement Form to communicate the activity and/or tabling you will be providing as a part of this event.
Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) are encouraged to actively participate in the Eclipse activities throughout the weekend. On Monday, April 8th, RSOs will be permitted to host a fundraiser on the lawn south of Neckers with other RSOs as a part of the StraightUp Solar Campus and Community Area. The fundraiser must follow all University RSO fundraising policies and should be themed with the Eclipse in mind. Interested groups are to submit their information via the Eclipse 2024 Solicitation Request Form. Questions? Email tenab@siu.edu.
Volunteer
We will also need MANY volunteers for the Total Solar Eclipse on April 8 (and the events leading up to it). For more information, and to sign up for volunteer updates, please visit our volunteer webpage.
Have Questions?
We hosted 3 information sessions in fall 2023 and 2 in spring 2024 faculty, staff, and students to learn more about events, programs, and the campus plan for the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse. For those that need the information, here’s a link to the recording: Eclipse Campus Information Sessions.
